With February being American Heart Month, self care is an important topic to discuss. We are all busy with so many things, but when are we taking time for ourselves and filling our cup backup?
Self care…. What is it exactly? This term is thrown around all the time, but what does it mean? Self care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. Simply put, remembering to make yourself a priority. This is a huge aspect of your health and wellness.
How often are you taking time during your week to revel in some self care? Everyone is going to have a different response to this question, and that is normal! Every individual needs a different amount and kind of self care. You may notice some weeks you don’t need it as much, and others you wish you would have scheduled more.
One of the simplest ways to make sure that you are prioritizing yourself is to remember to take AT LEAST 20 minutes a day for you. This can include:
Going for a walk
Staying off of your phone
Sitting in silence
Eating lunch away from the desk/TV/ etc.
Other self care ideas include:
Watching a movie
Catching up on your shows
Phone call with a close friend
Lunch with a friend
Turning off your phone
Some days and weeks it seems impossible to get self care in, let alone everything else that needs to be done. Remember this… you are your number one priority and you deserve to take that time for you! Never feel guilty for filling up your cup before giving to others. Try out different ways to incorporate self care into your life, and see which ones end up working the best!
