What is corporate wellness & why do we need it?

While the concept of corporate wellness is not truly “new” to the workplace, the modern implementation of it has seen some much-needed upgrades.

Originally started as a way for companies to (at least) appear to care for the safety of their workers with bare minimum standards, the practice has evolved over time. By the late 1860s, formal policies and efforts leaped forward to becoming more prevalent and intentionally implemented. Super fast-forward to 2013, when Forbes published an article that stated., “Engagement, motivation, support, and strategy are the keys to a successful program. If employees are not involved in the solution, it’s difficult to succeed.”

In today’s modern workplace, corporate wellness includes programs and benefits beyond simple measures preventing bodily harm while working. The new use of the term “corporate wellness” has taken the usual health care coverage for the whole family (sometimes even the four-legged ones!) to now also include gym memberships, onsite mental care, provided meals, and support groups, the term has been taken to a whole new level. Though it varies by company size and location, many employees can expect to see a corporate wellness solution beyond the usual insurance options in their benefits packages.

Since most full-time employees (at any level of the company) spend more time at – including their commute – the office, it is in an organization’s best interest to create and cultivate an environment that takes a multi-faceted approach to health. Successful comprehensive plans incorporate ways to encourage healthy habits, work to improve employee health outcomes, and aim to increase engagement.

Ultimately, the benefits list all adds to better workplaces and improved bottom lines. Even if you are a non-profit, seeing growth on your bottom line is what “it” is really all about. Taking the time and effort to improve your staff’s overall health and well-being with a company-wide wellness program is well worth it.

Once a plan is devised and put into action, managers and owners can expect to see many benefits in return. A well-done corporate wellness program can level up productivity, optimize human resource investments and boost employee satisfaction. The benefits do not end there. In practice, healthier employees and a comprehensive wellness package will:

  • Cut the annual healthcare costs to your company

  • Give you a competitive edge during the hiring process so you’re able to find and retain top talent

  • Increase productivity during work hours

  • Improve staff engagement with each other and customers

  • Reduces the number of sick days claimed

  • The rate of creative, dynamic solutions to problematic situations raises

  • Levels and signs of continuous stress wanes

For these reasons and more, there has never been a better time to create and implement an employee benefits package that encompasses a well-rounded set of wellness opportunities for your staff.
