FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL HEART MONTH

February is recognized as American Heart Month. Promoting regular exercise in the workplace can help your employees become more heart healthy.

Why promote regular exercise in the workplace?

The heart is a muscle, and it needs to be exercised. Regular exercise is extremely important in preventing heart disease and stroke, and helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, which is about 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week.

What does moderate exercise look like?

  • Walking

  • Riding a bike

  • Gardening

  • Dancing

  • Water Aerobics

  • Swimming

How can regular exercise be implemented in the workplace?

Incorporating health and wellness into the workday doesn’t have to be complex. A few simple ways you can implement wellness at your company include:

  • Regular walking meetings

  • A monthly walking club

  • Host a stair challenge

  • Host a step challenge

  • Onsite fitness classes 1-2x a week

  • Reward employees for their participation in activities related to health and wellness

  • Create health and fitness challenges

  • Create an office space that encourages and supports physical activity during and outside of work
